TREVO Shield

TREVO Shield

Protection That Works As Hard As You Do

TREVO Shield is a P2P insurance benefits plan designed specifically for car sharing. Built in partnership with Allianz General Insurance and Etiqa General Insurance, TREVO is a PIAM-registered insurance agency that acts as agent for these insurers. Shield covers third-party liability, vehicle damage, fire & theft, roadside assistance, and more — so you can share your car with confidence.

Shield premiums are fully borne by TREVO. You only pay the Marketplace Fee difference based on your chosen plan. It's that simple.

Understanding Insurance for Car Sharing

What is Private Motor Insurance?

Private motor insurance is a legal requirement for every vehicle on Malaysian roads. It protects you financially against accidents, theft, and third-party claims. There are three main types:

What Does Private Insurance Typically Cover?

A standard comprehensive policy usually includes:

Why Private Insurance Doesn't Cover TREVO Bookings

Here's the critical detail most hosts miss: private motor insurance policies have a "carriage of passengers for hire or reward" exclusion. When a TREVO guest pays to rent your car, your private insurer considers this a commercial activity — and they will deny your claim.

Even if your guest caused the accident, even if you have comprehensive coverage, even if you've been with the same insurer for years — if they find out the car was rented on TREVO at the time of the incident, your claim will be rejected. You would be personally liable for all damage, third-party claims, and legal costs.

WARNING: Making a false declaration to your insurer (claiming the car wasn't rented when it was) is insurance fraud. This can result in your claim being denied, your policy being voided, and legal action against you.

Why You Need TREVO Guard

TREVO Guard is how you renew your car insurance the right way for P2P car sharing. It's your base motor insurance policy issued by Allianz or Etiqa — insurers that have partnered with TREVO and explicitly allow P2P car sharing. When you renew through TREVO Guard, the P2P add-on is included automatically and for free, so every booking is properly covered from day one.

Daily P2P Protection

Daily P2P Protection ensures your car is covered every day it's booked on TREVO. It's extra protection on top of the base Shield plan.

Shield Plan Cost per booking day Who pays
Shield 60 RM0 (Free) 100% covered by TREVO
Shield 65 RM0 (Free) 100% covered by TREVO
Shield 75 RM3 / day RM3 host + RM3 TREVO (total RM6/day)

Note: Daily P2P Protection is only applicable to listings with P2P-compliant insurance (Allianz or Etiqa General). It is charged via host earnings payout and applied automatically — you don't need to do anything to activate it.

TREVO Guard — Insurance Renewal

TREVO Guard is how you renew your car insurance the right way for P2P car sharing. Here's how it works:

  1. Open the TREVO app and tap TREVO Guard
  2. Select Renew Insurance and fill in your details
  3. Choose Comprehensive coverage
  4. Select Unnamed driver / All drivers

The P2P add-on is added automatically and for free when you renew via TREVO Guard. Your Base Policy must be from a P2P Insurer (Allianz or Etiqa) through TREVO Guard to be eligible for Shield 60/65/75 plans.

Important: Non-Allianz or non-Etiqa policyholders are NOT eligible for Shield 60/65/75 plans. You must have your Base Policy from a P2P Insurer through TREVO Guard.

How TREVO Shield Differs from TREVO Guard

TREVO Guard is your base motor insurance renewal — the mandatory insurance every car on Malaysian roads must have. It's issued by a P2P Insurer (Allianz or Etiqa) and serves as your primary insurance policy. Without it, you cannot legally drive your car.

TREVO Shield is the tiered benefits add-on on top of your Guard policy. It determines your earnings split (60%, 65%, or 75% of booking revenue you keep) and provides extra protection like NCD relief, loss of income, roadside assistance, and minor dent coverage. Shield premiums are fully borne by TREVO — you only pay the Marketplace Fee difference.

In short: Guard = your base insurance policy. Shield = your earnings plan + extra benefits. You need both to host on TREVO.

Switching to TREVO Guard: Step-by-Step

Already have insurance with another provider? Here's how to switch to a P2P Insurer through TREVO Guard:

  1. Contact your current insurer. Inform them you'd like to switch providers and cancel your existing comprehensive policy. Ask about any cancellation fees or refunds for the unused portion of your premium.
  2. Complete the JPJ K6 form. This form authorises the transfer of your vehicle's insurance records. You'll need to submit your name, IC number, vehicle registration number, and new insurer details (Allianz or Etiqa).
  3. Cancel your existing policy. Once the K6 is processed, your current insurer will cancel the policy. DO NOT cancel before completing the K6 — driving without insurance is illegal.
  4. Request NCD release. Your No Claims Discount belongs to you, not your insurer. Request an NCD release letter or certificate. You'll need this when setting up your new policy with TREVO Guard to preserve your discount.
  5. Wait for confirmation. The transfer typically takes 3-5 working days. Once confirmed, open the TREVO app, tap TREVO Guard, and select Renew Insurance to set up your new policy with your P2P Insurer.

Important: Do not cancel your existing policy until the JPJ K6 form has been processed and your new policy through TREVO Guard is ready to activate. There must be no gap in your insurance coverage — driving without valid insurance is a serious offence in Malaysia.
