A Complete Insurance Overview for TREVO Hosts

Private Motor Insurance

Private Motor Insurance is a standard car insurance policy designed to protect you when you're using your vehicle for personal or private use only. It's commonly purchased by everyday drivers and is required by law in Malaysia to drive on public roads.

What Does Private Motor Insurance Typically Cover?

Depending on your coverage type (Third Party, Third Party Fire & Theft, or Comprehensive), it usually includes:

  • Accidents while driving for personal use

  • Fire or theft damages

  • Injury or damage to others (third parties)

Why Private Insurance Doesn’t Cover TREVO Bookings?

Once you list your car on TREVO, it's considered part of a peer-to-peer (P2P) car sharing platform. That means the car is no longer being used solely for personal purposes, and most Private Motor Insurance policies exclude commercial or rental activity.

⚠️ Important:
If an accident occurs during a TREVO booking, your private insurance claim could be denied. This may leave you personally liable for damages or losses.

Why You Should Renew Your Insurance with TREVO Guard — and How It Works

When you share your car on TREVO, it’s important to make sure your insurance follows peer-to-peer (P2P) compliance. This ensures your car is properly protected whenever it’s rented out.

Here’s how it works:

  • TREVO Guard helps you get your car insured under a P2P-compliant insurance policy.
This is the base insurance you need before your car can be shared on TREVO.

  • After obtaining your P2P-compliant insurance, your listing must have the Daily P2P Add-On Protection. Daily P2P Add-On Protection gives your car full protection during TREVO bookings — including coverage for accidents, theft, fire, and third-party claims.

  • The Daily P2P add-on will be automatically applied by TREVO, as long as your base insurance is P2P compliant. This add-on costs RM6 per booking day — but don’t worry! Depending on your Shield plan, you may get up to 100% subsidy, meaning it could be completely FREE.

Having both TREVO Guard with Daily P2P Add-On ensures your car is properly protected from start to finish. TREVO Guard sets up the foundation, while the Daily P2P Add-On keeps your car covered each time it’s booked.

Already have an active car insurance policy, but it isn't P2P-compliant?

Don't worry—switching is easier than you might think. To fully protect your vehicle while sharing it on the platform, you'll need to transition to a compliant policy. Simply cancel your existing coverage and activate TREVO Guard. Here is exactly how to do it:

1. Cancel your road tax with JPJ first Before an insurance company can cancel your active policy, you must first cancel your vehicle's road tax. Because valid insurance is legally required to hold road tax, insurers need proof that your road tax is cancelled before they terminate your coverage. You will need to visit a JPJ branch, bring your original road tax (if physical), IC, vehicle grant, and bank statement, and fill out the JPJ K6 form to cancel it and claim a pro-rated refund.

2. Contact your current provider to cancel your insurance Once your road tax is cancelled, call or email your current insurance provider's customer service and provide them with the JPJ proof of cancellation. Inform them you are cancelling your policy mid-year to get a pro-rated refund. Crucial step: Explicitly request that they update the system to release your No Claim Discount (NCD) so it can be applied to your new insurance.

3. Wait for official cancellation confirmation Do not purchase your new insurance immediately. Wait until your current provider issues an official cancellation letter or endorsement. This document proves your old policy is officially inactive and your NCD is "floating" and ready to be claimed by a new provider.

4. Activate TREVO Guard and renew your road tax Once your cancellation is confirmed and your NCD is released, you can immediately purchase TREVO Guard. Your NCD will automatically apply to the new quote. Once your TREVO Guard is active, you can renew your road tax again.

5. Update your profile via Live Chat Finally, don't forget to reach out to our team via Live Chat! Send over your new P2P-compliant insurance policy and request an update to your account. Once verified, your car will instantly be fully compliant and ready to be hosted.

What is TREVO Shield — and How is it Different?

Unlike TREVO Guard, TREVO Shield isn’t an insurance provider — it’s a commission-based benefit package specially crafted for TREVO Hosts.

Here’s how it works:

  • TREVO Shield offers tiered protection and benefits based on the commission rate you agree to give TREVO for your bookings.

  • The higher the commission rate, the more benefits and protection you receive (e.g. lower deductibles, better earnings protection, and other platform perks).

  • It’s designed to reward Hosts who contribute more to the platform with greater support and coverage.

To ensure seamless protection, your Base Policy (Private Motor Insurance) must be purchased from a P2P-compliant insurer. We highly recommend obtaining it through TREVO Guard for smooth support and convenience.
